TRX 420 wear points we look at
ES angle sensor and shift motor
FE and TE models change gear electrically. Stuck in one gear or flashing a fault? Try a charged battery first. After that it's usually the angle sensor or shift motor, and we cost the fix in.
Front diff and CV boots
A split boot lets grit in, and then the joint clicks on full lock. We check the 4WD engages too.
Sealed rear drum brake
Honda sealed the rear drum against water. Months stood in slurry can still leave it weak or sticking.
IRS joints on the FA
DCT automatics carry rear CV joints and bushes a solid-axle FM doesn't. We check each.

The 420 goes by three names
To sell a Honda TRX 420, start with the badge. Honda UK calls it the TRX420 FourTrax. Elsewhere it's the FourTrax Rancher, and most farmers just say 420.
It arrived in 2007 to replace the TRX350 Rancher, with a 420cc engine that's fuel-injected and liquid-cooled. For 2014 Honda gave it a new frame and bodywork, even new clocks. The FA automatic was updated a year later.
Solid axle or independent rear
FMs and FEs have a solid rear axle. Crude, yes. Also strong and cheap to keep going. The FA's independent rear rides ruts better but has more joints to check.
Reading the VIN and engine number on a 420
Honda stamps the VIN into the frame at the front, often under caked mud. The engine number is on the upper side of the rear crankcase. A wire brush helps. Still can't read either? Our walkthrough for locating a quad's frame number lists the hiding places.
Plenty of farm 420s never had a V5C, and the dealer invoice does the same job. At collection we check your photo ID and match the VIN to that invoice before paying.

Top money goes to a low-hours FA6 with DCT and power steering. A straight FM sits just below. An FE depends on clean gear changes.

Look at the letters after TRX420 on the V5C or invoice. A P or 6 in there means power steering.
Mine has an ES fault. Will you still buy it?

Is a TRX 420 worth more than a TRX 500?
Usually the 500 is worth more. A tidy, low-hours 420 can still beat a tired one.
My TRX 420 was never registered. Is that a problem?
