What moves a UTV's price

Hour meter, not odometer

UTVs sell on hours, not miles. Low hours on an older machine can outweigh high hours on a newer one.

Diesel against petrol

Farms usually want diesel. A diesel Gator or Kubota has more buyers for that reason, though a tidy petrol UTV still sells to leisure owners.

A cab with doors and a heater

A complete cab adds real money, especially heading into autumn. Only a roof and screen? They still count.

The bed floor and the tow hitch

Power tip or manual? Liner fitted? A rotten bed floor costs more than scuffed sides.

Four-wheel drive and the diff lock

If the diff lock won't engage or the power steering has gone heavy, tell us now. We'd rather price it in than find it on the day.

Crew cabs and fold-out rear seats

Shoots and large estates want the extra seats. A crew cab carries a premium when the seats and bulkhead work.

Find your UTV by make

To sell your UTV, start with the make. Each has its own page.

Gators: Kent's most common farm UTV

Mostly diesel and petrol XUVs. We also get HPX work-site machines and little TX runabouts from golf clubs. There's a John Deere Gator page for every range, and owners of a diesel Gator XUV 865M or a petrol Gator XUV 835M have model pages of their own.

Kawasaki Mule, from SX to Pro-DXT

Plenty of old 3010s and 4010s are still at work on farms, alongside the little Mule SX and the diesel Pro-DXT crew cab. See how we buy a Kawasaki Mule.

Polaris Rangers with a plate, and without

Some Rangers are road registered. There's a battery EV as well. See selling a Polaris Ranger UTV.

Can-Am Traxter, the UK Defender

Americans know it as the Defender. Here it's the Traxter, including tractor-homologated versions with a plate. See selling a Can-Am Traxter.

Honda Pioneer and its fold-out seats

Pioneers have a name for lasting, so high hours don't put buyers off. The 700-4 and 1000-5 have fold-out rear seats. See selling a Honda Pioneer.

Yamaha Viking for shoot days

Three seats on the Viking, six on the Viking VI. Plenty of shoots use one to carry guns and beaters between drives. See selling a Yamaha Viking.

Kubota RTV and the smaller makes

Kubota's diesel RTVs are built like compact tractors. On those, the hydrostatic transmission matters most. See selling a Kubota RTV. Smaller makes such as CFMOTO's UForce get a look too.

Work UTV or sport side-by-side?

You sit side by side in both, and there the likeness ends.

Farm and estate UTVs

A work UTV has a tipping bed and a tow hitch, and it's geared for a farm track. Its next owner looks at the hours first. Then the bed floor, then whether 4WD goes in. Scuffed plastics barely register.

Sport side-by-sides and buggies

These are built for fun. They have bucket seats and long-travel suspension and far more power than a work machine needs. Mods and crash history move the price much further than on a work UTV, and so does racing. Sport owners should go to selling an off-road buggy, where there's also a Polaris RZR buggy page and a Can-Am Maverick X3 and Trail page.

Number plates and proof of ownership on a UTV

Most farm UTVs have never had a number plate. They've only ever worked on private land. We buy them on the original invoice or a dealer's receipt, or anything else that solidly proves the machine is yours.

Some Polaris Rangers and Can-Am Traxters are sold in the UK as tractor-homologated machines. Those come with a V5C. It should be in your name. If it isn't, show us how the machine came to you.

We check photo ID before we pay. Then the paperwork goes against the VIN stamped on the frame, and plated machines get exactly the same check. Lost the documents? A finance settlement letter or the dealer's records can often fill the gap.

Collecting from Weald vineyards and livery yards

We come to the UTV, wherever it's kept. Usually that means a farmyard or a barn. Sometimes it's a gateway at the end of a rutted track. The trailer has a winch for machines that won't drive on, and collection is on us throughout Kent, London and the South East, with UK-wide collection by arrangement.

Home for us is Kent. A lot of the UTVs we're asked about work on its estates and shoots. The Kent Weald has vineyards around Tenterden and Biddenden and horse yards in most villages, and between them they need small, tough machines for grape crates and hay bales. The UTV a vineyard replaces is often still sound.

On a working site, tell us when the yard is quiet and who holds the key.

UTVs that won't start or have rotted through

A UTV that won't start still has value in it. So does one with a seized engine or a bed that's rusted right through. The winch gets it on board. Here's how we buy non-running UTVs.

For a ballpark on a Gator, read our John Deere Gator values guide. For a real figure on any make, put your UTV through the offer form with a photo of the hour reading. We look at that first.

Selling a farm UTV: us or an advert?

Sell to Off Road Buyers
  • Whatever the make, a price within 24 hours
  • We load it ourselves, even from the end of a muddy track
  • Paid by bank transfer before the machine is strapped on
  • Collection is free and there's no commission to pay
Classifieds, auctions, dealers
  • Paying for farm and machinery adverts, then fielding the calls
  • Waiting for a machinery sale, then paying the auctioneer
  • A dealer trade-in that only works if you buy their stock
  • Showing strangers round a working yard, then chasing payment

Selling a UTV or side-by-side: your questions

Do you buy diesel UTVs as well as petrol?

We buy both. Diesel Gators and Kubotas are among the UTVs we're offered most.

Is a UTV with a full cab worth more?

Usually, and most of all heading into winter. Send a photo from inside so we can see the doors and heater.

My UTV has no number plate. Can you still buy it?

That's normal for a farm UTV. We'll want the original invoice or similar proof, and we check the frame number against it.

Will you take the snow plough or sprayer too?

Add the plough or sprayer to the form and it's priced in with the machine.

Can a farm partnership or company sell a UTV to you?

It can. We'll need proof the business owns it, and evidence that you're entitled to sign for it.

Will you buy a UTV that doesn't run?

Yes. The winch pulls it on and the offer allows for the fault. Collection is still free.
